Donald Trump is fully engaged in making preparations to take control of Greenland. Recently, the Donald Trump administration approved a defense budget of $1.5 trillion, which is the largest defense budget in the history of the U.S. Department of Defense. Trump has repeatedly stated in his statements that the biggest threat to Greenland comes from Russia and China. He claims that these two countries will seize control of Greenland sooner or later, which would pose the greatest threat to the United States. With the objective of eliminating this threat, Trump wants to incorporate Greenland into the United States.
Earlier this month, on January 3, on Trump’s orders, the U.S. military changed the government in Venezuela; or, viewed another way, the United States has indirect control over Venezuela. Therefore, Trump’s confidence is very high right now. “At the same time, America is also showing its power—that if any country poses a threat to U.S. security, it can take control of it.”
Since his first term, Trump had been saying that he wanted Greenland, but because he did not win a consecutive second term, he stepped back. After the Biden administration, and after winning the 2024 presidential election, Trump has made it clear that the United States will take Greenland, stating that it is very necessary for America’s security.
European countries starting deploying Troops in Greenland
European countries—Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Finland—have started sending their military troops to Greenland. There are also reports that the United Kingdom has sent only a single soldier to defend Greenland. France, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom have stated that, in addition to land forces, they will also provide maritime and aerial security to defend Greenland. “There is also talk from Canada about sending its military troops to Greenland; however, no such statements have been made publicly by the government yet.”
“The United States, Denmark, and European countries are also members of NATO. In such a situation, if the United States moves to occupy Greenland, NATO would break apart. If NATO breaks apart, European countries would face threats from two sides: the United States and Russia. Some European countries have stated that if the United States moves to occupy Greenland, then, as NATO members, they will activate Article 5.”
Trump impose tarriff on European countries
Donald Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on eight countries, including Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Finland. Trump has said that these eight countries are weakening the United States’ objective of acquiring Greenland and challenging America by sending their military Troops to Greenland, and Trump does not want any country to challenge the United States.
“The 10% tariffs imposed on these eight European countries will take effect from February 1, 2026, and if these European countries do not stop or reduce sending their military Troops to Greenland, the tariff will increase from 10% to 25% starting June 1, 2026. After Donald Trump raised tariffs on European countries, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he would impose tariffs on services provided by American tech companies.”
What is the Trump’s main objective in going to Greenland?
Greenland is very important for EV vehicle manufacturing and AI development. Greenland has abundant reserves of rare earth metals, which can be used in EVs and AI technologies. Major and rapidly growing U.S. AI companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI have made heavy investments in Greenland’s mining industry. The U.S. EXIM Bank wants to acquire the Tanbreez deposit in Greenland—one of the world’s largest rare earth projects—for 120 million dollars. Many U.S. technology and mining companies have invested money in Greenland, and in such a situation, if Chinese mining companies enter Greenland, it would pose a threat to American companies.
The second reason is "debt on USA, As of January 2026, the U.S. national debt, Approximately $38.6 trillion, has reached historic levels and is accelerating at a pace that many economists find alarming.
If every single person in the United States were to repay this loan, each individual would bear a debt of $115,300. America’s total debt of $38.6 trillion amounts to a Debt-to-GDP ratio of 123.6%. This means that the debt is far greater than the country’s total annual economic output. Because of such an enormous level of debt, the United States knows that it will not be able to repay it. And all the countries that have provided the U.S. with debt in the form of investments and loans will one day demand their money back. To avoid this, there is only one solution: war.
However, war would also cause losses for the United States, and to avoid those losses, America needs a defense shield. That's why Donald Trump last year called for the creation of the Golden Dome multi-layer missile defense system, which would protect the United States from external threats. This is also the reason Trump has increased the defense budget so significantly.
Donald Trump wants to acquire Greenland so that defense systems can be established there. After Greenland, Trump’s focus would be on Canada. Alaska, Greenland, the United States, and Canada would all be included in a single multi-layer missile defense system. In this way, America would become fully secure from external threats.
It is also being estimated that as ice continues to melt, a new trade route is opening up via Greenland. Because U.S. trade largely passes through the Panama Canal, it takes a considerable amount of time. In such a situation, if the United States were to gain control over Greenland, the trade route would become much shorter and more secure.
Donald Trump has offered Denmark $700 billion to buy Greenland. Donald Trump has clearly said that we will include Greenland in America either through a deal or by some other ways.
